The Laurentian region was colonized near the end of the nineteenth century. Catholic priest Antoine Labelle populated the northern region of Montreal with French Quebecers to counter protestant expansion plans. Feeling that Laurentian tourism would be strong one day, he pushed for and gained inauguration of the Montreal-Saint-Jerome railway in 1879.
